It's like we're getting the punch-line to a joke, but not the set-up. Notice, though, that Albee never tells us in what context the little ditty was sung. Some unknown person sang the parody at the party that the characters attended earlier, and it was apparently hilarious. It's a parody of "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?" from Disney's The Three Little Pigs. So, what does that have to do with the title? Think about it: the title comes from a joke. Therefore, everything we do to create meaning in our lives is ultimately pointless or absurd. Absurdists believe that life has no meaning (at least not one that we can ever be sure of). We think it's also possible that the meaning of the title might represent a concept on which the play is based: absurdism. Later, George sings it to try and drown out Martha's barbs. Martha sings it to try and get a rise out of George. Of course, whenever it shows up in the play, the line is used more as ammunition than a funny ha-ha moment. A Bad, Sad JokeĪlbee goes on to note that the line, and how it makes a play on Virginia Woolf versus the big bad wolf, seemed to him "a rather typical university, intellectual joke." ( source) And as we know from the play George and Martha want to be typical university, intellectual people. The fact that Woolf was all about truth and layer peeling, leads some to think that Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is just another way of asking, "Who's afraid to live without illusion?" Albee confirmed this in a Paris Review interview in which he said, "Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf mean who's afraid of the big bad wolf…who's afraid of living without false illusions" ( source). Her work often criticized and peeled back the layers of pretension that masked her social peers. Also, Woolf, like Albee, was a product of the upper class. Woolf tried to show the emotional truths churning behind the eyes of her characters she tried to get inside their heads and really show what it was like to be them. Virginia Woolf was a writer famous for her stream of consciousness style. This all leads us to ask: just who is this Virginia Woolf person? What does she have to do with the play? Was Albee just being totally random? Probably not. The play never tells us exactly what the title is supposed to mean, and no one named Virginia Woolf ever shows up within it. However, I still remain hopeful that perhaps the visual end of the digital synthesis revolution has only been delayed. GPUs have followed a similar march down the curve of democratization but for some reason broad access hasn't unleashed a similar hobby renaissance on the visual synthesis side like it has for visual capture and editing with mobile/DSLR imaging and desktop video editing. It's odd because the musical synthesis domain seems to have been unleashed by increasing access to dedicated hardware DSPs in the 90s followed by rapid, iterative 'software-ization' as general-purpose processors became capable of replacing DSPs (MMX etc). The visual side mostly remains polarized into DJ/VJ-centric real-time apps and pro-level video editing and 2D/3D rendering tools. Sadly, that stunning progress in democratizing music synthesis has not been equally mirrored in the visual synthesis domain. A similar gap existed in music tools 20 years ago but remarkable progress has been made in closing that gap empowering in-betweeners like me to achieve wonderful results with only hobby-level skills, time and budgets. Yet the "visual synthesis" tools I've played with seem to remain split into two extremes - essentially "too algorithmic / Geiss-like" on one end and "too complex and art-talent-thirsty" on the other (for example Blender 3D, AfterEffects). I find it super enjoyable and despite not formally studying music, not reading traditional music notation nor being able to play any musical instrument well in real-time, through step recording to a MIDI multitrack timeline (and subsequent on-screen tweaking) I manage to create remarkably pleasing, quite commercial-sounding original music.Īs an equally enthusiastic video hobbyist, I've long-wanted to create my own original visuals to accompany my music. Indeed! I produce music for fun using virtual synths, multi-layer sound libraries, audio plug-ins and MIDI combined in a software digital audio workstation (Cubase at the moment). The coolest stuff these days is in 3D and projection mapped. So not exactly real-time stuff back then, might be now. I actually talked to the person who made this and they said this took like 9 hours to render. YEARS ago (so it looks kind of fuzzy now) I remember this guy hacked together some synths he programmed with visuals generated for them, it's really psychedelic stuff: They've gone and tweaked the basic formula from just FFT to something that actually does "peak detection", which is better explained in that article than I can here as it involves a lot of math. There was some really cool research I found recently which I think I'm linking here if I'm not mistaken: Most of these just work on playing loops set at certain BPMs at the lower end of actual responsiveness, to a fast fourier transform which can maybe separate out further based on frequency range, maybe just roughly from bass/mid/treble, further mapped to rendering (Like here in projectm, which as I recall is just a fork of milkdrop). It's a completely community-driven project and we're always looking for help. We welcome PRs and generally respond quickly to them. * The build system was ported from a very-broken CMake setup to autotools, and then back to CMake again, soon to be released as a new major version 4.0.0. * Text menus and preset searching in the SDL app (keys listed in README) Almost-working multi-bundle installer code signing and notarization. macOS installer for the plugin and SDL app. * Updated support to work first with more recent versions of iTunes as a plugin and more recently as a Music.app plugin. * Halfway-completed port to the web with Emscripten * Optimizations for preset evaluation using the LLVM JIT * Improving the FFT maths and PCM data interface The conversion isn't perfect and can cause a few shaders to fail compilation but these problems do get fixed when someone takes the time to dig into them. ProjectM had to incorporate a shader transpiler to convert preset shader code on the fly from HLSL to GLSL so that projectM can run on platforms other than windows. * Milkdrop was a windows-only win32 affair, and the shaders for presets have all been written using HLSL, for DirectX. Trying to keep software and user-contributed presets and shaders from 20 years ago working are efforts that are never finished. There have been a good number of major improvements in projectM in the last few years, which is impressive considering the age of this project. People with Android devices can find the Jennis Simple! Then look no further… There sure are some extreme and epic visuals, and I dig the shout out to Ubisoft's (the game developer) other game franchise which followed in the footsteps of their modern Prince of Persia a series: Assassin's Creed (the scene where he's on the tower near the beginning about the jump off). With the team behind the movie, we can see that this is a classic summer blockbuster for everyone along the same lines of The Mummy and Pirates of the Caribbean. A rogue prince (JAKE GYLLENHAAL) reluctantly joins forces with a mysterious princess (GEMMA ARTERTON) and together, they race against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the Sands of Time-a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.Īs Screen Rant master Vic points out, this trailer sure has the feel and aesthetic of Stephen Sommers' The Mummy. Prince of Persia stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan (unnamed in the video game) as he tries save the world using the an ancient time-manipulating weapon and the help of a foe/love-interest.Ĭheck out the action-packed and visually appealing trailer after the jump.įor those unfamiliar with the story of the movie, here's the synopsis:įrom the team that brought the “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy to the big screen, Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films present PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME, an epic action-adventure set in the mystical lands of Persia. Based on the popular video game series which made it big with the release of Sands of Time back in 2003 and its pair of sequels the following two years, the video game adaptation is hoped to help bring a change to a movie genre that has traditionally suffered from low quality movies based on known video game franchises. It has been over 10 years since there was news of a new Prince of Persia game. Finally! Our first real look at Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has arrived in the form of this HD trailer courtesy of Rotten Tomatoes. The game was originally slated to be released on January 21 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, but it was unveiled last September. This is the second time that Ubisoft has postponed the release date of The Sands of Time remake. The franchise was once one of Ubisoft’s flagship series, but initially lost that title to Assassin’s Creed, and now it’s a game that’s gaining popularity among players new to the franchise. The series has not seen a new entry for PlayStation 3, Windows PC, and Xbox 360 since 2008. Ubisoft is revamping the Prince of Persia series with a reboot that promises improved graphics, modern controls, new character models, improved voice and sound, parkour animations, and a soundtrack. According to Ubisoft’s original announcement, the remake will include visual enhancements, improved graphical assets compared to 2003 original, a new camera, and a battle control overhaul. We have made great progress and our game will be released next year, but we are not yet ready to share additional information. Since 2014, the game has sold more than 14 million copies across all platforms. The Sands of Time was recognized for outstanding innovation in computer games, outstanding performance in game design, outstanding performance in visual engineering, outstanding performance in animation, and outstanding performance in gameplay engineering.Īn update from the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake development team: /z9sFaBwz9N The PC version shares a lot with the console version and has been praised for the operation and responsiveness of the camera, but caused criticism. The player controls the main protagonist, an unnamed prince of the Kingdom of Persia. One of the trailers for the game during its announcement trailer in September during the Ubisoft’s Forward Presentation gave us an early glimpse of the newly filmed cutscenes and gameplay. Considered the best in the show, it introduced the franchise to a whole new generation of people. The reception was mixed as the remake of 2003 classic The Sands of Time featured stunning graphics, but fans were looking forward to its return. The surprise leak has been the subject of controversy, but the remake was a welcome return for fans of the franchise classic. Fractal takes it for the Meshify 2 and, to some extent, the Meshify 2 XL that we haven’t formally reviewed yet. We assign this one based on build quality, construction, moving parts, how those parts fit together, and the mechanics of the case. The next award is for Best Mechanical Design. The combination of good cooling, good price, and competent design at the price point make it this year’s winner. The 215 isn’t necessarily the highest-scoring case in every test we’ve done, so there are other winners for more specific categories, but it’s a great case and an easy choice for best overall. Even cases with filters need to be cleaned, so we don’t consider that much of a downside.Ĭheck out the review for more detail on this one because, like any case, it does have some down-sides. The front panel has no backing filter, which we like because it benefits thermal performance, but the interior of the case will need some attention and cleaning over time as a result. We’d advise against a front-mounted radiator for this one, just because the 200mm fans won’t line-up well with standard radiator sizes. The 200mm fans aren’t suitable to be paired with a radiator, and replacing them defeats the purpose of buying the case. Big fans are quiet by nature and move a lot more air thanks to the larger hole, it just tends to be at lower pressure since Lian Li’s mesh front isn’t too restrictive, the pressure wasn’t as much of an issue as you’d see in acrylic-fronted cases of the past, like the H500P.Īs a $70 budget-category case, we’d recommend the 215 primarily for less expensive builds that don’t use a lot of liquid cooling. The chassis isn’t really built for such large intake fans and to some extent they’re wasted, but they still do a good enough job to put the 215 near the top of our cooling charts on a regular basis, and performance was especially good in our noise-normalized thermal test. To achieve that, the 215 comes with two 200mm ARGB front fans, a 120mm rear exhaust fan, and a wide-open mesh front panel. Lian Li partnered with another company to produce the ultra-budget steel-and-glass case with the express goal of getting the best possible airflow at the lowest possible price. The 215 diverges from Lian Li’s traditionally high-end aluminum enclosures, and instead is closer to its recent Lancool II and Lancool II Mesh designs (as the name implies). Lian Li positioned the Lancool 215 as its “P400A Killer.” We may not entirely agree with that-the P400A Digital is still a great case at $90-but the P400A won this award last year, got another mention in our mid-year case round-up this year, and now it goes to the 215. We’re giving this to the Lian Li 215, which we were neutral to positive about at launch, but which has proven itself worthy as the rest of the cases came out for the year. The first award is for Best Overall, which factors price, mechanical design, thermals, acoustics, and build quality into the consideration - but especially price-to-performance. The target audience for this piece is either people returning to PC building for the first time in a while - those who might be out of the loop - or people who haven’t had time to watch or read every single one of our case reviews over the past year. We’ll embed a few charts occasionally, but to get the full charts, you’ll want to check the individual case reviews for each enclosure. This does not influence our decision to choose one case over another - we’re choosing based on our empirical testing data from the last year or so. We often earn a commission from the retailer (not from the manufacturer and not from your purchase) if you click on the links. We’ll talk about some of those, too, like the Phanteks P400A.Įach case will be accompanied with a link to our review and to the product listings. This coverage provides a flyby overview of the best cases we’ve reviewed or worked on in the past year, but keep in mind that cases don’t age like CPUs or GPUs - many good cases from 2019 are still available, and in some instances, the pricing has improved. We’ve already published a buyer’s guide for the Best CPUs of 2020 (for gaming, workstation tasks, video editing, and more), and now we’re back with the Best & Worst PC Cases of 2020. We’re back for our annual “Best Of” series.
